John Bance & Son

Peter Thomas

Peter was born in Bendigo in the early 1960s and early on in life developed a passion for music, studying piano and clarinet. After graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts on clarinet Peter joined the Australian Army as a musician, with postings in the ‘80s and ‘90s to Perth, Brisbane, Wagga Wagga (where his eldest son and daughter were born) and Townsville (where his youngest son was born). In the mid ‘90s Peter was selected to attend the Band Officers Course where he undertook extensive training in conducting and composition. Upon graduation Peter was posted as Music Director to bands in Townsville, Newcastle, Brisbane and finally Wagga Wagga where he has now been residing for nine years. Highlights of his time as a professional musician and music director include: two tours to Timor Leste (East Timor) to entertain troops and locals, performing at over 450 recruit march-out parades at Kapooka, and leading bands to perform in Malaysia, Tonga and Turkey (including at Gallipoli for the centenary of the Battle of Lone Pine).

Throughout his career Peter has performed at thousands of ceremonies large and small, and he strongly believes that there is a place in modern society to conduct ceremonies that mark important milestones or events in our community, as they offer a time for reflection and commemoration or celebration. He therefore feels honoured and privileged to be working with John Bance & Son who share his philosophy that funerals should provide the community with the opportunity to mourn the loss of a loved one, but more importantly allow time to remember and celebrate a life lived.

Peter is a keen marathon runner and can regularly be seen running the streets and trails around Wagga whilst training for his next big race, and he continues to pursue his passion for music by performing regularly with the Wagga & District Highland Pipe Band.
